About
L'Angelière and Villeray History
In 1974, our grandmother encouraged by her friend living in Villeray, charmed by the property and its bucolic setting, purchased her joyful retreat.
The Heart Of L’Angelière
L'Angelière, grandmother's serene place; a passionate gardener, angel-lover, talented cook, loving person, and nurturer. Now, with the baton passed, we continue to carry on the traditions by sharing our special retreat with you. Since 2012, we have been continuously renovating, making adjustments where needed to keep the charm and soul of the house alive, while adding modern-day comforts.
History Of Villeray
In the middle ages, Villeray was the residence of a chivalrous family; their servants and officers of the lord (bailiff and notary) merchants, craftsmen, and day laborers settled there. Thus, the hamlet of Villeray was born. The lords of Villeray guarded the Huisne valley in the names of the Talvas, lords of Belleme, to keep an eye on their neighbors, the lords of Nogent Les Rotrou. The land of Villeray was erected as a baronet in 1593 in favor of Gilles de Riants by King Henri IV to thank him for his loyalty to the crown and his people. Today, Villeray is one of the most scenic hamlets in the Perche.
History Of L’Angelière
L’Angelière is full of history and intrigue. The annexed Sun room, adjacent to gardens and a well-tended lawn, were once classrooms and a concrete school playground. Students created decorative art planks, which now adorn the kitchen pantry doors. Today, this versatile space has been repurposed for guests to enjoy with a book, an artist’s stroke, or toys in hand. The best perk is to relish in the garden’s sun room while it’s raining.
In the 70’s, when my grandmother purchased the property, there were 3 houses and the former annexed classrooms. Two of the houses were in complete disrepair. With the help of architects and a renovation team, the houses combined create one stunning architectural beauty, L’Angelière.
Accented with circular windows, and 4 fireplaces, and in keeping with Le Perche’s rich architectural heritage, the house was built with creamy limestone and flint stone, seamed together with Le Perche’s beautiful orange and gold sand.
About Clémentine
Many years ago, living in Massachusetts, and reassessing life and career, Clémentine uprooted her life and moved to France to restore L’Angelière and open it as a guest house. It’s been a labor of love, especially reviving her Grandmother’s 50-year-old roses and gardens.
